On July 14, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division sent a letter to Maryland State Board of Elections Administrator Jared DeMarinis requesting detailed information on the state’s compliance with the voter list maintenance provisions of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA). The Department of Justice raises concerns about the integrity and accuracy of Maryland’s voter registration list, referencing unusually high registration rates, a large number of confirmation notices, discrepancies in voter registration data, and findings from a 2023 state audit. The DOJ is seeking records, explanations, and data regarding the processes Maryland and its local election boards use to update voter rolls, remove ineligible voters, handle duplicate or deceased voter records, and ensure compliance with federal law. The state has been asked to respond within 14 days.
